Sound Deading on a 1993 Hummer |
I bought my hummer back in 2003 and because it is a 93 it had a lot of noise that can with it. Over the years I tried a lot of things to help with the noise. I tried Dynamat on the engine cover, installing the new shifter boot cover, as well as on the driver side floor. All of these things helped but not that much. At the Homecoming in 2006 I spoke to Peter Hipson who told me about a modification that would fix the noise. I kept putting it off until there was recent talk on the HML about it. I finally got around to it and WOW what a difference. You can tell a difference. Total time was about 2 hours. Below is a list of the parts that I used and details. |
First off—take the dog house off |
With the dog house and engine cover removed |
Wrap both sides of the engine cover with Dynamat. |
Once the engine cover is removed you need to remove the sheet metal that is covering the defrost duct. You need to remove either 5 or 6 bolts from the front (cab side) and 4 or 5 bolts from the engine side. Also make sure to tape up the holes on the engine side with military spec tape. |
Wrap the piece of the sheet metal that you took out with Dynamat on both sides. |
Use the longest nozzle that you can find and spray “Great Stuff” foam on either side of the defrost duct. Make sure to get both the driver and the passenger side. DO NOT spray the foam on the hose that is between these ducts. |
Use fiberglass insulation used on HVAC and stuff it around the hose that is between the defrost ducts. |
Reinstall the sheet metal, engine cover, and the dog house. You should notice a BIG difference. |
Total time - maybe 2 hours (taking my time) Total cost - $20.00 |
Tools - 3/8 Open end wrench 5/16 socket One can of “Great Stuff” Some fiberglass insulation (stuff for HVAC) |
